Preventative BOTOX®

Preventative Botox is an increasingly popular treatment. We all have movement and lines on our face. It’s natural and beautiful. What we don’t want are lines that stick around at rest, or after we’re no longer making the movement with our facial muscles. The best way to avoid this is by using BOTOX®, Dysport® or Xeomin® to decrease repetitive muscle movement on the face. This will prevent lines at rest from developing.

If you’ve never heard of preventative Botox, the concept is simple. The ingredients in a Botox injection relax tissue in the face, preventing muscles from moving as much as usual. If this is done preemptively, or as fine lines and wrinkles are forming, it can stop deep-set wrinkles from emerging. This is a great option for people just noticing signs of ageing, and it can be very effective for people of all ages. What is Preventative Botox?

Think of folding a piece of paper over and over again. If you continue to fold the paper, the crease just gets deeper. If you stop folding that paper, the crease doesn’t get deeper. This same idea applies to muscle movement on the face. For example, if you keep squinting your eyes and developing crow’s feet, the lines will eventually be present at rest. But, if you stop squinting, the lines will remain the same without growing deeper. Over time, this rest will produce new, healthy skin cells and new collagen to make the line at rest less noticeable. This is the idea behind preventative Botox.

We recommend starting BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® treatments early to stop these lines during their development phase. If you notice yourself making movements on your face that lead to lines, like raising your eyebrows repeatedly and noticing horizontal lines on your forehead, now is the time to act. Preventative Botox will relax those muscles and prevent lines at rest from developing. The treatment can be performed in a very natural way so that you don’t look ‘done.’ Instead, you’ll just continue to look like your best self.

What to Expect with Botox

A preventative Botox treatment is identical to a regular treatment. Your doctor or medical technician will sit down with you to discuss the desired results, and you’ll receive recommendations for placement and treatment. Before the injections, we’ll clean the skin and use a topical anesthetic to numb the area. The doctor will then inject the preventative Botox at the desired points. The whole treatment will typically take around 45 minutes to complete.

Once the injections are complete, you will be free to go. There is no suggested recovery period, but we recommend avoiding facial massaging for the two or three days directly following a preventative Botox treatment. The effects will become visible in seven to ten days, and the treatment will last for between three and six months.

psoriasis symptoms

Psoriasis isn’t contagious, but awareness is.

Psoriasis is a condition that causes the body to produce new skin cells faster than usual. This causes thickening, scaling, and redness of the skin, along with severe itching. The condition affects around 2% of the total population in the United States and can occur at any age and any skin type.

Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body and in the majority of cases appears as thick, scaly patches called plaques. Most often they occur on the scalp, back, knees and elbows. There are different types of psoriasis and symptoms may differ based on which specific type a patient has. For instance, someone with guttate psoriasis may see numerous small, circular, thin red plaques all over their body, while someone with inverse psoriasis may experience areas of smooth, red, raw-looking patches of skin that can be sore or painful. There are two very serious, rare forms – pustular and erythrodermic. These can affect the entire body and sometimes even be life-threatening.

Typically 80-90% of patients experience the non-life threatening plaque type of psoriasis, which is characterized by those thick, red, scaly plaques on the surface of the skin.

Is it contagious?

Psoriasis is not contagious and you cannot ‘catch’ it from someone who has it. Even though we know this skin condition does not spread from person to person, researchers are still looking for the direct cause of why and how it develops. We do know the condition tends to run in families and shows a genetic link. There is also a proven immune link.

There are many triggers for flare-ups including viral illness or infections, weather changes, stress or injury. An important part of treating and controlling psoriasis is helping the patient to understand and recognize what triggers their symptoms.

The most common symptoms occur on the skin as plaques and rashes. However, nail changes and joint swelling or pain can also indicate psoriasis. Once diagnosed, many times the condition can be treated and controlled with topical creams. The treatments will always vary on the type, location, and severity of the disease. Light therapy is sufficient for many patients. In some cases, oral or injectable medicines will control the condition.

While psoriasis is not curable, it is treatable and there are many options available. Patients are largely able to control their symptoms and go on to have healthy, comfortable, and clear looking skin.
