Go Back to Being You with Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is the only clinically proven method of erasing a tattoo without causing extensive scarring. While that tattoo on your arm may have seemed like a good idea at the time, times change. The person you were at 20 years old might not be the person you are now. Fortunately, tattoos no longer have to be permanent. With laser tattoo removal, more than 90 percent of a tattoo can be faded.

Each person has a unique reason for wanting a tattoo removed. Maybe the design you chose is now embarrassing, or maybe it reflects the person you used to be. Perhaps the tattoo is in a highly visible area, and you’re about to begin a job that discourages body modification. No matter your reason, Zel Skin & Laser Specialists can help. Schedule an appointment at one of our offices to learn about how laser tattoo removal can change your life.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser tattoo removal uses light to remove embedded ink. This laser light is absorbed by the ink, which then heats up and shatters into smaller, less visible ink particles. In the days and weeks following the procedure, the body will naturally flush away these shattered particles, allowing the tattoo to fade. Laser tattoo removal has the best results when practiced over several sessions.

What to Expect with Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal treatments will vary by person, so it is important to schedule a consultation prior to treatment. During the procedure, the doctor will clean the area and apply a numbing cream, then run the laser over the targeted area. Many of our patients describe the sensation as similar to the process of receiving a tattoo.

Every tattoo will respond differently to laser treatment. These variations can include the size, location, and age of the tattoo. Additionally, precise results can vary for the following reasons:

  • Type of ink used
  • How deep the ink penetrates the skin
  • How the tattoo was applied (i.e. with a tattoo gun or hand-poked)

Some ink colors respond better than others to laser tattoo removal treatment. Black and red inks generally respond the best, while blue, green, and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove. Professional tattoos typically require 6 to 12 treatments, and sometimes more. Amateur tattoos tend to require 5 to 6 treatments.

We’ll discuss how to care for your skin after tattoo removal, but you can get a general sense of what to expect with this guide for tattoo removal skin care from the American Academy of Dermatology. Even at the end of the treatment process, some discoloration may occur, and some pigment changes may remain.
