Protective Clothing Keeps You Looking Good and Feeling Good, too!

We know how much everyone enjoys the sunshine during our Minnesota summers. But protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays needs to be a top priority.  The clothing you wear is the first line of defense when it comes to sun protection.  In fact, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended covering up with clothing, broad-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.

By now, most people are familiar with SPF, Sun Protection Factor, found in sunscreens.  It’s recommended to wear a 30-SPF sunscreen with both UVA and UVB blocking capabilities on a daily basis.  For clothing, there is a similar protection factor called UPF, which stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor.  This factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate the fabric.

Clothing with an UPF of 50 would allow for 1/50th of the sun’s UV light to reach the skin.  The higher the UPF, the greater the sun protection for your skin.

Your Skin’s too Important to Leave to Chance

At Zel Skin and Laser Specialists, we focus on preventing skin damage as much as correcting it.  To enjoy all your days spent in the sun and protect your skin from future corrective treatments, we recommend the following protective regiment:

  • Daily Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater applied to all areas with sun exposure
  • A hat with a 3-inch or greater brim
  • Long-sleeved shirts with higher necklines
  • Long pants verses shorts
  • Sunglasses with UV-blocking lenses

Clothing fabrics with sun-protection have become lighter and more breathable. Most people find that covering up with these types of fabrics actually keeps them cooler since the sun rays are reflecting off the fabric and not being absorbed by the skin.

You can find a small selection of UV protective clothing at Zel Skin & Laser Specialists provided by Coolibar, a Minneapolis-based business.  For more information visit
