Can CoolSculpting® Remove Belly Fat?

Extra fat around the midsection is something many people are self-conscious about. Despite that common dislike of belly bulk, losing stomach fat on your own can be a challenge because of the higher number of fat cells that accumulate in the area. Men, especially, are prone to having a heavier upper body. Aging, genetics, or pregnancy can also make you more likely to have some extra flab in this region. Whether you have the dreaded “beer belly,” “love handles,” or a “muffin top,” slimming down does more than just enhance your physique and help you to fit better in your clothes. Losing unwanted fat can improve your posture and your mood. At our practice in the Minneapolis area, CoolSculpting® for belly fat can be the best way to attain a flatter stomach. However, this fat-freezing treatment only works on belly fat in certain cases.

There are two types of fat in the abdominal area: subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Everyone has some of both of these types. Visceral fat (hard belly fat) is a more dangerous type found deep in the abdomen, near the vital organs. Large amounts of this type of fat can make someone more prone to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Smoking, stress, eating badly, and drinking too much can cause you to have more visceral fat. This type of fat builds up and causes the overlying tissues, muscles, and abdominal wall to protrude outward at the surface, which is why it feels rigid.

Subcutaneous fat is squishy, below-the-skin, pinchable fat that has a soft texture. Most of our body fat is this type.

CoolSculpting® for Belly Fat

CoolSculpting® only works for decreasing soft, grabbable subcutaneous fat on top of the muscles around the stomach and flanks. It’s better to increase your activity level and maintain a healthier diet if you’re trying to remove visceral fat.

That said, a CoolSculpting® session can decrease subcutaneous belly fat by up to 25 percent. The abdomen is one of the most commonly targeted areas for CoolSculpting®, which causes fat cells to crystalize, die, and be flushed from the body.

Comparing Juvéderm® vs. Sculptra® Aesthetic

Skin aging is inevitable. Unfortunately, in its protective role, our largest organ suffers damage from the sun, the surrounding environment, lifestyle choices, and more. Thankfully, there are steps we can take to grow older gracefully and manage signs of aging that appear. With that in mind, however, patients may be unsure as to whether they should try injectables or some other option. Since there are so many treatments available, it can be difficult to know which one to go with. Put simply, no one filler is better than the other. Individual results depend largely on the patient’s unique physiology and metabolism, as well as the skill of the injector.

That said, two of the most popular choices for restoring the appearance of aging skin are the Juvéderm® family of fillers and Sculptra®. Our Zel Skin & Laser Specialists team in the Minneapolis area offers Juvéderm® filler consultations to help patients determine which wrinkle-filler is the right choice.

Juvéderm®

Later in life (but sometimes as early as a person’s 20s and 30s), visible signs of aging show. This is because collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin, and other molecules start to degrade faster than they are replaced in the skin. The Juvéderm® collection of fillers consists of products designed to address these specific problems. All of the fillers in the line are made with hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring sugar molecule with a clear, viscous consistency keeps connective tissues throughout the body lubricated and cushioned. When Juvéderm® is injected below the skin, it takes up space there, acting as a “placeholder” for the proteins like collagen and elastin, essential oils, and moisture that have been depleted.

This filler is mainly used on the center and lower face for moderate to severe creases such as nasolabial folds. JUVÉDERM® ULTRA and JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS are both effective on wrinkles, but ULTRA PLUS is beneficial for more pronounced lines and hollows because of its thicker consistency.

Sculptra®

Similar to Juvéderm®, Sculptra® volumizes the skin when it has become thinner and less elastic from aging. Its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), encourages gradual collagen production to revive the structure of the skin. Although some improvement will be seen immediately, the skin will continue to strengthen over several months. This filler is especially beneficial for smile lines and chin dimpling.
