A Link Between Breastfeeding and Eczema

Eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin, which we commonly see in our pediatric (and adult!) patients. It causes itchy, dry skin that may become painful or infected. A child’s likelihood of developing eczema can be influenced by both their environment and whether they have a family member with eczema, but we now also have research that suggests that babies who are exclusively breastfed may have a lower likelihood of developing eczema.

The link between breastfeeding and eczema is not yet conclusive. However, it seems that children who were breastfed for their first few months are less likely to still have eczema at age 6. There is also evidence that children who were breastfed exclusively for at least 3 months have milder, shorter eczema flares.

We are still learning about this link between breastfeeding and eczema. However, we find this information to be promising as we continue to learn more about why certain skin conditions develop.

Indoor Tanning Bed News

We’ve long known that there’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanning bed use is not part of a healthy lifestyle. However, there have been more arguments against tanning bed use published in recent months. Cancer Epidemiology published their findings that 5-8% of all skin cancers (including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers) diagnosed in Canada during a single year (2015) were attributable to indoor tanning bed use. This equates to approximately 5,000 cases of skin cancer!

It was also reported last month that South Carolina is considering legislation to become the 18th state to ban minors from using tanning beds. During the hearings, the president of the South Carolina Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery testified that use of indoor tanning beds before the age of 35 can increase the risk of melanoma by nearly 60 percent. SIXTY percent!

These statistics are frightening and help us to emphasize how dangerous indoor tanning beds truly are.
